ANXIETY THERAPY

Has Life Become Overwhelming?

Are you a millennial or Gen Z woman who is struggling to balance your relationships, career, and mental well-being?

Do you feel the need to stay constantly busy and feel anxious whenever you slow down and try to relax? Does the pressure and pursuit of perfection leave you emotionally exhausted and burnt out at the end of the day?

While outwardly, you may give the impression that you have life all figured out—you may actually be full of insecurity and self-doubt inwardly. Your mind probably feels like it runs at 100 miles per hour and never shuts off, leading to overthinking and coming up with worst-case scenarios. Because you may be a high achiever, your perfectionist tendencies compel you to prove your self-worth through work or other activities. You might avoid slowing down because self-reflection activates your inner critic or brings up uncomfortable emotions you’d rather not think about.

Your Health And Relationships May Suffer

Your health and relationships may suffer from anxiety

You might have a hard time being present in your relationships or tend to self-sabotage them. Rather than setting healthy boundaries and expressing your needs, you might return to unhealthy relationships because they’re comfortable or avoid having difficult conversations for fear of rocking the boat. What’s more, the physical symptoms of anxiety—such as headaches, heart palpitations, digestive issues, fatigue, and high cortisol—may be contributing to your distress.

You may be living in chronic fight-or-flight mode if your anxiety is not in check, which negatively affects your overall well-being. The good news is therapy offers the skills and tools to manage anxiety, perfectionism, and people-pleasing effectively. With counseling, you can get your anxiety disorder in check and find more enjoyment in all the things you’ve worked so hard to achieve.

Mental Health Is Negatively Impacting Gen Z And Millennials At An Alarming Rate

Unfortunately, mental health has become increasingly common in younger generations, especially for women. According to recent statistics, “53 percent of Gen Z millennial women struggle with anxiety,” and “41 percent of millennial women are anxious.”

For younger women, the achievement bar has been raised to such a level that it’s become unattainable. One unfortunate consequence of closing the gender gap in the workplace is that we are expected to perform our jobs flawlessly to keep up with our male counterparts. However, if we decide to have children, the expectation that we remain the primary caregiver hasn’t shifted. This double standard becomes a common source of stress and burnout.

Social Media Perpetuates The Myth That Women Should Have It All

One look at social media makes it clear that the stakes are high for millennial and Gen Z women. We scroll through images of our counterparts living their best lives—good careers, financial stability, healthy lifestyles, perfect outward appearances, flourishing social lives—and naturally feel like we can never measure up. The illusion of social media only dispensing the best parts of people’s lives creates an unrealistic benchmark for comparison.

Unfortunately, the resulting anxiety we experience is hard to overcome on our own for many reasons, including:

Living in chronic fight-or-flight mode keeps us stuck

The coping skills we have cultivated don’t address underlying issues

We fail to take a well-rounded approach that addresses mind and body

Work burnout has made it harder to prioritize our needs

Fortunately, anxiety therapy offers you a time-out and a reset. Receiving one-on-one anxiety treatment with a counselor provides you with an individualized approach tailored to your specific needs.

Anxiety Therapist, Maria Reiter

I Offer A Holistic Approach To Alleviate Anxiety

To effectively treat anxiety, it’s helpful to take a holistic approach to therapy that not only explores your thoughts and feelings but also examines your current environment and social supports, as well as your nutritional, exercise, and mindfulness habits.

Psychoeducation about the ways nutrition, sleep, and exercise affect nervous system regulation will help you determine what underlying factors contribute to anxiety the most and improve your mental health through simple yet effective lifestyle modifications. Looking at the bigger picture allows you to gain a new perspective and look at your anxiety differently.

What To Expect In Anxiety Counseling

We will work together to identify your objectives and meet your goals. Depending on what you want to accomplish, we will incorporate intention-based goals in between sessions so you can implement what you learn in therapy into real-life situations. We will also work on dismantling people-pleasing and perfectionistic behaviors that hold you back from living the life you want.

Anxiety therapy will include elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based coping skills. Learning coping skills will help you deal with stress and anxiety more effectively, heal from burnout, and cultivate self-compassion.

With support, it’s possible to live alongside anxiety without fearing it. When you understand what your triggers are and expose yourself to challenging situations, you will gradually become calmer and more grounded. Once you ditch perfectionism and people-pleasing, you can find more self-compassion within yourself to live the life you want.

But You May Wonder Whether Anxiety Therapy Is Right For You…

  • As helpful as anxiety therapy can be, it has the potential to become traumatic if your therapist is not well-trained to address your specific needs. I take a holistic approach to sessions, determining what was helpful or hurtful in previous therapy experiences to create a unique plan tailored to fit your needs. If something isn't working, I will ensure we modify our treatment plan so that you see the benefits of anxiety counseling.

  • When it comes to anxiety treatment, I am not a worksheet-based therapist. I aim to incorporate actionable goals for you to work on in between sessions to help you achieve what you have set out to accomplish. For example, to address people-pleasing tendencies, we might collaboratively decide that setting a boundary with a family member would benefit you. Putting the things you learn in anxiety therapy into practice will help you achieve your goals more quickly so you can start feeling better sooner.

  • Even if anxiety has been with you so long that it feels like a part of your DNA, change is always possible. You can learn ways to manage anxiety in healthier ways that no longer negatively impact your mental or physical health. As we get to know each other in therapy, I will teach you healthier coping skills for anxiety that will help you approach things in your life differently.
